Ansel Adams

One of the most well-known American landscape photographers, Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco on February 20, 1902. He is best known for his black and white images of natural landscapes and national parks. In 1916, following a trip to Yosemite National Park, Adams began experimenting with photography. He developed and sold some early photographs at Best's Studio in Yosemite Valley, and in 1928, Adams married Virginia Best, the daughter of the studio's proprietor. His reputation began to grow, and he also began working to bring attention to conservation of nature through his artwork. By the 1960s, his work was shown in large galleries and museums; in 1974 the Metropolitan Museum of Art held a retrospective exhibition of his art. He passed away in California on April 22, 1984.
