Erwin Blumenfeld

Erwin Blumenfeld is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Born in Germany in 1897, Blumenfeld was drafted into the German army during World War 1 before moving to Amsterdam where he gained access to a fully equipped darkroom. He secured a contract with French Vogue in 1937 and by 1950 was reported to be the highest-paid photographer in the world, shooting more covers for Vogue than any photographer before or since. Blumenfeld died in 1969 leaving behind an estate including thousands of prints and negatives.
