Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt was born in the outskirts of Vienna on July 14, 1862. He attended the School of Applied Arts along with his brother Ernst. The brothers opened a studio in 1883, working in the historic Ringstrasse style. By the early 1890s, Klimt was maturing as an artist and developing his own modern, decorative style. Klimt was a leading figure in the resignation of artists from the conservative Vienna Artists' Association and the formation of the Vienna Secession in 1897. After visiting Ravenna in 1903, Klimt was strongly influenced by the golden Byzantine mosaics in San Vitale. In 1908, the "Klimt-Group" split from Vienna Secession and organized the Kunstschau, which was centralized around the "Klimt-Room". Klimt suffered a stroke on January 11, 1918 and died on February 6.
