Paul Cadmus

Paul Cadmus was born in New York City on December 17, 1904. He began attending the National Academy of Design at the age of 15, and graduated in 1926 with various prizes. After working as an advertising layout artist in New York City, Cadmus decided to give up commercial work and traveled to Europe with his friend Jared French in search of fine art inspiration. Cadmus was accepted into the Public Works of Art Project in December 1933. His 1934 painting "The Fleet's In!" caused public outcry due to its risqué nature, and consequently launched his career. Cadmus's work became known as Magic Realism and frequently contained elements of eroticism, social critique, and homosexuality. Cadmus passed away in December 1999 at the age of 94.
